Anju Maugdal Kadam and Ally Matthan أنجو مودجال كادام و ألي متهان

ربما تعلمون أنني قد قمت برحلة إلي ولاية جوجارات الهندية في شهر فبراير 2014 و قد سجلت الرحلة في كتابي “مذكرات الباباد“.من قرأ الكتاب يعلم أنني كنت برفقة خمس سيدات هنديات تعرفت بهن لأول مرة عندما هبطت في أحمد أباد. الشيء الذي جمعنا هو شغفنا بالنسيج و الرحلة كانت لإستكشاف ما يُسمّي ب”درب النسيج” في ولاية جوجارات. أنا لم أتحدث في الكتاب عن رفيقاتي لأن الهدف كان تسجيل ما شاهدته علي الدرب لكن ظل بيني و بين تلك الرفقة الرائعة تواصل عبر الفيسبوك. و هنا تبدأ حكاية اليوم

You might know that I took a trip to the Indian state of Gujarat in February 2014, which I recorded in my book “The Pappad Diaries“. Those who have read the book would know that I was in the company of five Indian women, who I got to meet for the first time when I landed in Ahmadabad. The thing that brought us together was our passion for textiles and the journey was to discover what is called a “textile trail” in the state of Gujarat. I did not talk about my companions in my book because my goal was to record what I saw on my journey, but I have stayed in touch with those fantastic women over Facebook ever since, and this is where today’s story begins…

لاحظت أن إحدي رفيقاتي تلتقط صورا لها مرتدية الساري و مستخدمة الهشتاج #100 ساري. في البداية لم ألتفت كثيرا للموضوع و لكن بعد فترة أصبحت أجد الهاشتاج علي صفحات أخري. بقليل من البحث عرفت أن ال100 ساري هي حركة تجتاح أجزاء من الهند الآن. الموضوع بدأ بصديقتان أنجو مودجال كادام و ألي متهان و اللتان كانت تتجاذبان  أطراف الحديث الذي تطّرق بهما إلي مجموعاتهما الخاصة من الساري و التي تقبع في الخزانة و رغبة كلا منهما أن ترتديالساري أكثر لأنه – في رأيهما – رداءا يعزز الثقة بالنفس. و الساري لمن لا يعلم ما هو إلا ستة ياردات (أي حوالي الخمسة أمتار و نصف) من النسيج سواء المغزول يدويا أو آليا و قد يكون قطنيا أو حريريا و قد يكون مطرزا بخيوط من ذهب أو فضة و قد يكون مطرزا بخيوط صناعية أو أحجار لامعة؛ إلخ. و النساء الهنديات برعن في لفّه و إرتدائه في مختلف المناسبات مستعرضات بفخر أجمل المنسوجات الهندية و براعة التطريز و هوية مميّزة جدا

I noted that one of my trip companions was posting photos of herself dressed in a saree and using the hashtag #100sareepact. At the beginning I did not pay much attention, but after a while I noted that hashtag popping up on more pages. With a little research I found out that the 100 saree is a new movement across India now. The story began when two friends, Anju Maugdal Kadam and Ally Matthan, were having a casual conversation when they touched upon their personal collections of saree that are sitting in the closet and wishing they could wear them more often, because, as they believe, the saree boosts their self confidence. The saree to those who do not know is nothing but six yards of fabric (close to five and a half meters) which may be loom or machine weave, cotton or silk, embroidered with gold and silver threads or embroidered with sparkling beads, etc. The Indian women are proficient in wrapping it around them for various occassions boasting proudly if the finest Indian textiles, the mastery of the embroidery and a very unique identity.

إتفقت الصديقتان أنه خلال العام ستحاول كلا منهما إرتداء الساري مائة مرة علي الأقل و في كل مرة ترتدي الساري تلتقط لنفسها صورة و تشاركها علي صفحة الفيسبوك مع قصة هذا الساري أو ذاك: متي حصلت عليه، ما الذي يجعله مميّزا، متي إرتدته لأول مرة و قد يكون الساري متوارثا من أم لإبنتها أو هدية من حماة إلي كنتها و هكذا. في وقت قصير إعجبت نساء أخريات بالفكرة و بدأن في إرتداء الساري و إلتقاط الصور و مشاركة القصص. و إنتقلت الحركة من الصفحات الشخصية علي الفيسبوك إلي موقعا إلكترونيا للمائة ساري و حكاياتها.يمكنكم قراءتها هنا. و هنا تنتهي القصة و تبدأ التساؤلات: أين زيّنا القومي الذي يعبرعن هوّيتنا؟ و هل نعتبر الجلابية زيّا قوميا؟ إن كان، فأي شكل للجلابية؟ و هل لدي أي منا جلابية تصلح للخروج للشارع و الذهاب للعمل و حضور الأفراح؟ هل نجرؤ علي إرتداء الجلابية مائة يوم في العام؟ أنا أطرح هذا للنقاش علي صفحة قوس قزح. أرجوكم أن تشاركوا بآرائكم

The two friends agreed that each of them will attempt to wear the saree at least 100 times during this year. Each time one of them would wear the saree, she would take a photo of herself and post it on Facebook and tell a tale of that saree: when she got it, what makes it unique, when did she wear it the first time. The saree could have been passed down from a mother to her daughter or a gift from a mother-in-law to her daughter-in-law. Soon enough, other women liked the concept and started wearing their sarees, clicking photographs of themselves and sharing their stories. The movement went from the privacy of personal Facebook pages to a dedicated sitefor the 100 sarees and their stories. You can read the stories here. My story ends here, but my questions begin: where is our national costume? Can we consider the galabeya a national costume? If yes, then which form of galabeya? Does any of us have a galabeya fit for going out, going to work and attentding weddings? Would we dare wear the galabeya 100 days a year?
